Echeveria Summer Care

Malaysia Hot Humid Weather

Succulent is known to be an easy to care plant. However, during the hot summer weather, it might go into hibernate mode. In Malaysia, there’s only hot dry season & heavy rainy season. Therefore succulent care might be slightly different compared to places with 4 seasons.

Water

During hot summer, it is important to know the technique of watering. It is best to water succulents at night or early morning so that there is time for the soil to dry before meeting the hot afternoon sun. Succulents roots may burn if they sit under scorching sun for a long period of time. Water at the side of the pot avoiding the middle part or use the dipping method instead. Make sure there isn’t any water droplets on the leaves to prevent burn.

Misting

Some suggest to mist the succulent lightly at night so they get enough water even during the hot summer. Ensure that the ventilation & air flow is good especially after watering or misting. It is also recommended to put a small fan for places with less ventilation.

Frequency

For a pot (15cm radius) like this, my watering frequency is usually between 2 to 3 weeks. The soil should be dry before the next watering. This soil is made up of around 50% of course particles therefore my watering schedule for a small 6cm pot is between 1 to 2 weeks. However, if the pot is made from porous material or have legs, succulent should be watered more frequently. Factors affecting watering frequency include:

Shade

It is also very important to give shade to succulents so they will not be burn under the hot sun. It is recommended for Echeveria to get 4-6 hours of sun everyday, avoiding sun from 11am to 4pm. Too much sun may caused the succulent to hibernate thus stop growing. Too little sun may caused them to elongate.

Prevention of

Pests & Diseases

Use enough pesticides to prevent pests like mealy bugs & red spider mite. Fungus attack and root rot can also be prevented by using Fungicide.
